As of this week, WASC has accredited our Shatila 1 education centre with Grade 12 equivalency. In simple terms, this means that Alsama’s six-year accelerated curriculum now reaches the same academic standard as schools delivering a full twelve-year education.
WASC is a globally recognised accreditation body, known for its rigorous approach to academic quality, governance, and student outcomes. Accreditation with WASC is a process rather than a one-off event, and each stage requires careful review and evidence that a school is delivering consistently high standards.
This latest milestone followed a review of our final year of curriculum, which is currently being delivered to our top-year students in Shatila 1. For us, this year is particularly special: it represents the culmination of years of work, for students who arrived at Alsama with no access to formal education, and are now studying at a level aligned with internationally recognised Grade 12 standards.
For our students, this matters enormously. It means that the education they are working so hard towards is not only meaningful and transformative, but also globally credible. For Alsama, it’s a moment great pride and a powerful validation of what an ambitious, community-rooted education model can achieve.
We’re incredibly proud of our students, teachers, and academic team, and deeply grateful for the care and commitment they bring to this work every day. We’re looking forward to sharing what comes next as we continue this journey with WASC.
Alsama provides refugee teenagers in the Middle East with a world-class education, while transforming refugee education worldwide.
